Communication

Goals
To continue to grow as an effective speaker and teacher, I will work to improve my verbal communication skills by teaching and giving presentations.

Strategies

  1. Seek the Lord in prayer about the content and topic.
  2. Use the “Women Teaching Women” strategies to write the content.
  3. Publish one YouTube video minimum a semester.
  4. Host a bible study via Zoom.

Resources

  1. Review notes and material from “Women Teaching Women.”
  2. Logos, class notes from biblical studies classes, and personal study books.

Measurements

  1. Allow secondary mentors to review and provide feedback.
  2. Have attendees complete a survey to measure their growth in knowledge of the Bible book or its content (before and after to establish a baseline).

Artifacts with Descriptions

The artifacts below are the review notes from the Wednesday Night Bible study, and above is a screenshot of some of our community. We have studied the books of 1 and 2 Kings to understand God’s covenant promise to David. Before each new lesson, there is a review of the previous lesson. We study one chapter a week, pray, listen to testimonies, and have some trivia fun.

Overall Reflection Statements
For my communication competence, I am submitting artifacts demonstrating (s) my continued development in communication. I have learned that it takes diversity in communication to reach everyone in an audience. It is essential to not conform to a particular style of teaching or speaking because everyone learns differently. The Bible study has single individuals, married couples, single parents, and seasoned believers. There needs to be a balance in my biblical teaching and application for where most of them are in their lives. As I facilitate lessons, it is crucial to apply relevant scripture to their life, which can only be done by the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Learning Reflection
As I developed and demonstrated communication, I learned I must be aware of my emotions, perceptions, and judgments while communicating with others. While teaching, I need to hear what others say, even if I disagree with what’s being said. I need to be open and gain a better view and understanding of the reasoning behind their position. It is essential not to be dismissive or accusatory, even as a teacher or speaker. Within the bible study, I learned it is hard for people to acknowledge a need for change. Who wants to be the person who does not follow what God has asked of them. To let the truth be told, we are all that person. None of us are perfect. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Remembering that we all are imperfect will help me become genuinely engaged with others.

LifeLong Development Statement
As a result of the experiences documented by these artifacts, I will continue to develop my communication skills in our changing culture by knowing my limits and being humble when others point them out. I will continue to communicate clearly by avoiding jargon or language that will confuse my audience. I will remember to stay present by not being distracted and focused on what I am saying. My communication style will be tailored to my audience by considering their background, knowledge, and preferences. I need to continue to understand the various means of communication and choose the medium that fits the context of my message.
